If you weren’t a fund manager, what job would you do?

I'm fascinated by all things to do with the brain, so perhaps something neuroscience related. Failing that, there are probably a few good years left to be had as a carpenter before Musk's robots take over.

What was the proudest moment of your career?

I was proud to be a small part of the ten-year anniversary of CC Japan Income & Growth Trust. I hope we can be equally proud when we celebrate its 20th.

What was the most difficult moment of your career and why?

Being part of a fund closure for reasons outside our control was an unsettling experience. However, it afforded me space and time to think clearly about what I wanted to do next. Happily, it led to the conclusion to recommit to Japan and to join Chikara.

What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?

Start learning Japanese now. You're going to need the head start.

Away from the workplace, how do you spend your time?

Tennis has always been a particular love of mine, and that has been complemented by padel over the last few years. There's nothing better than a few hours of exercise ending with a debrief in the pub.

Tell us about the last book you read.

In lieu of a wedding list, my wife and I asked our friends and family to give us a favourite book of theirs – we'll be working through the library for many years to come! I recently finished Moth Smoke by Mohsin Hamid; the book follows a rogue banker in Lahore and his descent into crime.

What is your favourite film of all time and why?

The fact that I stared blankly at this question for a good few minutes suggests I don't have one... That said, one I saw recently that left a lasting impression was All of Us Strangers – Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott, what's not to love?

In your personal life, what would you like to achieve in the next 12 months?

I try to always have a physical challenge on the horizon for motivation. This year's is a trail marathon on the Greek island of Hydra. Pray for clouds...
