If you weren’t a fund manager, what job would you do?
Journalism is a career that I was always drawn towards. So it’s a privilege to work in a job where so much of it is about holding people to account, digging into all kinds of subjects and challenging yourself to see the nuance amongst the noise.
What was the proudest moment of your career?
Taking on CT UK Capital and Income Investment Trust. It was a special moment to take up the mantle after my predecessor’s formidable 28-year stint. I was already running pooled funds but it really struck me that these trusts are living, breathing companies. So it’s a privilege to have a chance to make a difference for our shareholders.
What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?
Keep questioning. Keep learning. Run your own race.

Away from the workplace, how do you spend your time?
My weekends are increasingly oriented around entertaining my two-year-old, and she can be a tough critic. Otherwise, I’m a lifelong ski fanatic and latterly have fallen head-over-heels for ski touring, where you traverse great of expanses of mountain with your kit on your back and nothing but your legs to get you up and down the hill.
Tell us about the last book you read.
Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Such timeless stories. I’ve only got round to reading some of these ancient classics in recent years, usually while visiting the Aegean islands they feature so often. Like the missing jigsaw piece of everything that’s come since.
What is your favourite film of all time?
There Will Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson. Utterly absorbing from start to finish and a blistering performance from Daniel Day Lewis as monstrous ‘oil man’ Daniel Plainview.
In your personal life, what would you like to achieve in the next 12 months?
My wife and I have the excitement of a second child due later in the summer, so adjusting to that major life event without too much drama would feel like an achievement to me…
