Today it was announced that Tritax Big Box REIT will be joining the FTSE 100 on Monday 2 March. From Monday there will be seven investment trusts in the FTSE 100 – 3i Group, Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust, Pershing Square Holdings, F&C Investment Trust, Alliance Witan, Polar Capital Technology and the new joiner, Tritax Big Box REIT.

Richard Stone, Chief Executive of the Association of Investment Companies (AIC), said: “A record seven investment trusts in the FTSE 100 is a testament to the benefits of the investment trust structure. Investment trusts’ assets have grown in value and some boards have taken advantage of merger opportunities too. The average size of an investment trust has now increased to £1 billion. Larger investment trusts have greater liquidity and can offer economies of scale for their shareholders.

“Investment trusts like Tritax Big Box are a tried and tested route to access hard to reach assets like property, infrastructure and unquoted companies. They offer diversified portfolios managed by professional fund managers and are overseen by independent boards of directors.”

Investment trusts also make up 35% of the FTSE 250 by number.
