If you weren’t a fund manager, what job would you do?
I’m trying to demonstrate to my children that I could have been a professional cyclist.

What was the proudest moment of your career?
Launching AVI Japan Opportunity Trust.

What was the most difficult moment of your career and why?
There isn’t a single occasion. But in general, when one thinks one has made a good decision and the market tells you daily you are wrong, it is never easy. This has happened on several occasions but with experience, it gets easier. Particularly as I have the support of a great investment research team.

What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?
Don’t be in a rush. Think long term.

Joe Bauernfreund

Away from the workplace, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy cycling and ride regularly.

Tell us about the last book you read or the last podcast you listened to?
The last book I read was The Hacker and the State by Ben Buchanan. It was recommended by my son Gabriel who is studying for a Masters in the Ethics of AI. It’s a scary analysis of how prevalent hacking and cyberwarfare has become in geopolitics today.

Where was the last place you went on holiday and why?
I’m writing this from Val Thorens where I’m with my family on a ski holiday.

In your personal life, what would you like to achieve in the next 12 months?
I want to achieve that ever elusive work life balance – cycling with my son is working towards the life part of the balance. But I love my job and enjoy working with the team I have built at AVI and hopefully we can enjoy continued success there too.
