What is the Monthly Information Release (MIR)?

The MIR is designed to facilitate data transfer across the industry with as little resource used by the data administrators as possible.

It is an information service which allows AIC member investment companies to disclose their data accurately and in a consistent format to be picked up by professionals and the major data providers such as FE fundinfo, Bloomberg & Morningstar.

The service is complimentary as part of AIC membership.

The data providers in turn use it to power industry solutions to their clients, including media, financial advisers, wealth managers, institutions and fund platforms and supermarkets – ensuring the widest possible audience for accurate and timely data on your investment company.

The AIC paper “Make the numbers count” has explored why improvements in data distribution are necessary for your investment company to be considered by all investors.

Data providers struggle to pick up accurate data for alternative asset investment companies especially.

  • Accurate, complete, timely, comprehensive and consistent data delivered to the industry
  • Quick and easy process to disclose your data
  • Data consumed electronically by all major data aggregators
  • Your company decides how regularly they wish to disclose and the lag in reporting. You can tie this to your own reporting cycles
  • Compliments your own literature and announcements
  • Dedicated AIC team on hand to help the process and answer any questions your stakeholders may have
  • Ability to widen the suite of data disclosed as the industry evolves.

The most popular data points disclosed are:

  • Gross and Net Assets
  • Net Asset Values
  • Shares outstanding
  • Gearing and borrowing details.
  • Corporate actions
  • Regional or geographical breakdowns

The MIR is housed on the AIC website here. Additionally, it is distributed to investors via a mailing list.

Over the last six months:

  • Over 85% of equity investment companies
  • 4% of alternative asset investment companies
  • 10% of VCTs

Traditionally, the information is submitted via the company's nominated administrator or management group representative.

Traditionally, alternative assets and VCTs have not reported to the MIR due to the lag in valuations.  However, the MIR doesn’t require you to report to the most recent month end. Data can be for previous months and will still be distributed within the data files.

The data points and methodology within the MIR is agreed by the AIC Statistics Committee, which consists of brokers, analysts, data providers and industry related parties. The Statistics Committee meets semi-annually to review any necessary issues or changes.

The MIR data collection involves your chosen fund administrator entering data through a password protected, secure, web-based collection service according to a scheduled time frame.

Data must be submitted by 5pm on the 4th working day of every month in order to be released in the MIR and any resulting publications which use the data. The MIR is then released after 4:30pm on the 5th working day of the month. There is an embargo on the distribution of the data until this time.

Data will still be accepted and disclosed within different data files if the company hasn’t reported within the standard monthly windows.

We are happy to add data points to the disclosures if there is investor demand for it.  We are also mindful the load on the administrators so generally new data points are optional rather than mandatory. Suggestions are welcomed from any industry stakeholders. The merits will then be discussed at the AIC Statistics Committee where a decision will be made.  The AIC would then contact the MIR administrators to explain any new data points.

It is anticipated that we will extend some of the data points that are reported which are more relevant for alternative asset companies.  All such enhancements would be consulted with the asset managers who would need to disclose this data. None of these data points would be mandatory.

Please have your data administrator contact [email protected] and we would be delighted to set this up, answer any questions, and conduct any demonstrations that may be necessary.
