Meet the manager: Phil Kent
Investment Adviser to GCP Infrastructure Investments.
If you weren’t a fund manager, what job would you do?
Probably a teacher. Or a pilot. I really don't know!
What was the proudest moment of your career?
Seeing some of the projects we have financed getting built and operating successfully. I've always enjoyed the tangible nature of energy and infrastructure projects, and being a small part of a project's journey from an idea to an operating asset is hugely satisfying.

Phil Kent, Investment Adviser to GCP Infrastructure Investments
What was the most difficult moment of your career and why?
The last two years have been a particularly difficult time, with the UK listed alternative income space, of which infrastructure forms a part, moving to a significant discount given the higher rate environment and transfer of capital to other sources of fixed income. Whilst you learn lots during difficult times, it has been challenging. That said, the biggest learning has been the importance of staying positive and optimistic.
What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?
Stay inquisitive and never stop learning!
Away from the workplace, how do you spend your time?
Mainly carting two young children around. Outside of that I am involved in our local rugby club, including coaching the U7s, and enjoy teaching myself to play the piano (badly).
Tell us about the last book you read.
‘Legacy: How to Build the Sustainable Economy’, by Dieter Helm. Understanding the challenges climate change presents, and how we might address these, is a subject I enjoy learning more about and is a critical one for current generations. Dieter Helm writes about this in a practical, clear and engaging way.
Where was the last place you went on holiday and why?
A week camping in South Wales. We love being outdoors and around the sea, mountains and lakes.
In your personal life, what would you like to achieve in the next 12 months?
We're planning a holiday with the family to see my brother that will involve a long haul flight with the kids – so to survive the flight, and to create some memorable adventures for us all once we are there!
