If you weren’t a fund manager, what job would you do?

I would probably be working in some sort of bank or lending capacity, as that’s what I used to do and enjoyed it.

What was the proudest moment of your career?

Getting through my first appearance on CNBC. Live broadcast – lights, earpieces and cameras – can be challenging and the relief of successfully navigating my first appearance many years ago still brings a smile to my face.

What was the most difficult moment of your career and why?

The global financial crisis because of how the markets and investors reacted – at points it looked like capitalism was, if not dead, at least in a coma for a while.

“I would like to have a great trip to Australia to watch the Lions tour – replicating the series win from 2013.”

What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?

Make sure you leave the bank and go to university – I was a mature student, starting my degree at 23.

Away from the workplace, how do you spend your time?

Cycling, trying not to drown in the sea, watching sport. I have coached football and rugby for the last ten years but have now stopped so have my weekends back and I am not sure what I am going to fill them with.

Tell us about the last book you read or concert you went to?

The last book I read was called Chip War by Chris Miller about the birth of the semiconductor, how the industry has developed and grown and why it’s now probably the most strategically important industry in the world.

I also recently went to a concert by the band Reytons in Rotherham, which was their hometown. They played great music, with meaningful and sometimes humorous lyrics and it was a weekend away with a group of friends I have known for over 40 years.

Where was the last place you went on holiday and why?

Rome – I took my daughter on a post A-levels trip.

In your personal life, what would you like to achieve in the next 12 months?

I would like to have a great trip to Australia to watch the Lions tour – replicating the series win from 2013.
