If you weren’t a fund manager, what job would you do?

Growing up I always told my family I wished to join the Royal Air Force, in the footsteps of my grandfather. I was an RAF cadet in my teens and loved everything about it – flying, assault courses, trips… even the discipline.

What was the proudest moment of your career?

Becoming a portfolio manager of CT Global Managed Portfolio Trust is a real privilege. Also completing all three levels of the CFA at the first attempt, whilst working full-time, was an achievement I didn’t think I had in me.

What was the most difficult moment of your career and why?

During Covid, the direct lending investment trusts required significant efforts to re-underwrite and engage with. The poor performers are often the ones you learn the most from. On a personal note, my dad passed away soon into my investment career. He lived a humble countryside life towards the end, and it took some time to recollect my thoughts.

What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?

Few occupations provide you with opportunities to continuously learn and improve. You’re fortunate to be in this industry – enjoy it!

Away from the workplace, how do you spend your time?

With two very young children, weekends are currently consumed with parenting and entertaining. Although we recently travelled across the world to Australia with both children to visit family. It took a lot of courage but for us adults they were memories for a lifetime. And for the kids a trip they won’t remember at all!

Tell us about the last book you read and concert you recently enjoyed.

Yuval Harari’s ‘Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind’ has stuck with me in terms of the evolution of our ways of living and societal norms. And whilst in Australia, we went to the Oasis gig in Sydney. 80,000 (mostly) expats singing songs from our childhood – an incredible night.

What is your favourite film of all time and why?

Forrest Gump is an easy watch I’ve seen multiple times. I’m a US political history nerd and it’s great how some the most iconic 20th century moments are happening in front of his oblivious eyes. Perhaps, some read across to today’s world. I also enjoyed the West Wing series.

In your personal life, what would you like to achieve in the next 12 months?

Teach my son to swim. Dance with my daughter. Consider “vets” football for age 35-plus.
