In the AIC’s second fantasy fund manager competition, we’ve asked six journalists to select four investment trusts that they expect to perform particularly well in 2026, but would be happy to hold for the long term. Below, the Daily Mail Group Wealth & Personal Finance Editor reveals which four trusts he’s selected and why he’s chosen them for this year.

Temple Bar

Run by well-established investment managers who know how to extract value from the UK stock market.

Mercantile Investment Trust

Another fund that should benefit from a strong UK stock market. Labour, of course, could put a spanner in the works.

Seraphim Space Investment Trust

A high-risk pick (short-term), a winner long-term. Could be my fantasy fund portfolio’s shining light in 2026 with returns going into orbit. Or its nemesis, with returns plunging through the earth core and beyond.

Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust

Another short-term gamble – could be a winner from some of its private portfolio seeking IPOs this year. Also, could struggle if the AI bubble bursts.

I think these are all long-term winners. For sure. But 2026 winners? You never know!
