Director talk: Manisha Shukla
Manisha is a non-executive director at European Opportunities Trust.
In the boardroom
How would you explain your role to somebody who was new to investment trusts?
The board's role is to look after shareholder interests and to work with the manager so that shareholders’ monies are being managed in accordance with the long-term investment objectives of the investment trust.
What’s the number one skill you bring to the board?
I have over 20 years’ legal experience in investment trusts. I currently work as the listed funds knowledge counsel at Travers Smith, which specialises in advising financial services companies. It is a perfect complement to being an NED as the role involves advising the Travers funds team on all relevant legal and regulatory developments, and this expertise then feeds back into the boardroom at the trust.
Always keep in mind that all decisions, however difficult, should be considered through the lens of what is in the best interest of the shareholders.

Who’s been the biggest influence on your career?
Aaron Stocks for showing me that technical excellence and interpersonal skills go hand in hand, and Nigel Farr for not only teaching me about investment trusts but also about fine wine.
What is the proudest moment of your career?
Being telephoned by the chair of European Opportunities Trust, inviting me to join the board. I was standing on a very crowded and noisy bus at the time which made it a rather surreal moment.
What advice would you offer to new directors?
Always keep in mind that all decisions, however difficult, should be considered through the lens of what is in the best interest of the shareholders.
Away from work
What’s your number one desert island disc?
Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar. It changes every day but will always be something from the 1980s.
Of all the places you have visited on your travels, which comes top of the list and why?
Cuba, where I took a road trip in my 20s; it's a unique and beautiful country.
What food couldn’t you live without?
I eat far too many Hula Hoops.
What are you terrible at?
Much to my frustration, I can't seem to bake a perfect pavlova. It's my baking nemesis.
What is a hidden talent that few people know you have?
I have a brown belt in karate.
What do you do for fun?
I love singing. During lockdown, I set myself a goal of learning to sing all of Mariah Carey's songs, with varying degrees of success!
Manisha is chair of the remuneration committee at European Opportunities Trust and funds knowledge counsel at Travers Smith LLP.
