Information not advice or a hard sell

We set up QuotedData about eighteen months ago as a research resource for anyone interested in UK listed investment trusts, investment companies and real estate investment trusts (REITs). We wanted to provide useful information for investors who want access to research on UK listed companies but find it hard to get hold of. One thing QuotedData cannot do is offer advice on investments and our research notes won’t tell you to buy or sell any fund. The aim of the site is to give investors all the information they might need either to make their own investment decisions or to better understand what their financial adviser is telling them. QuotedData is a trading name of Marten & Co which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Free

We don’t charge for access to the website or to receive our research. Our business is funded by those investment managers and investment companies who want investors to be aware of and to understand their fund.

Straightforward, unbiased research from an experienced team

We benefit from having one of the most experienced research teams dedicated to this area. They try to write research which is clear, concise and understandable. We know that the financial industry uses a lot of jargon and abbreviations that often seem designed to confuse so we will avoid these if possible and our website includes a searchable glossary of terms. We don’t write “puff pieces” on our clients or skirt over bad news, if we did our readers wouldn’t respect our research. We think it is more important to explain what went wrong as well as what went right.

Daily news

Every day the website highlights the important / interesting news stories in the sector. You can sign up to an RSS feed to get these in your inbox.

Monthly roundups

Every month we publish a roundup of the major events in the sector; who is performing well and badly, whose discounts have widened or narrowed, who is raising money and who is handing it back. We also collate the economic and political views of Boards and Managers and publish these each month. This provides a fascinating insight into what these investment experts are thinking about the world. Our other monthly publication gives some basic valuation information on subscription shares, warrants and zero dividend preference shares.

Wealth of Data

The Data section of the website is fed by Morningstar. We have stripped out some of the more technical information that they supply to make it more accessible. In this section you can compare similar funds (they are arranged according to the sub-sector classifications devised by the AIC), looking at things like yield, discount, long and short-term performance and gearing.

Information on every fund

Then, for every investment trust, investment company and REIT listed in London (over 400 of them), there is a separate section that has a few lines that explain what the fund is trying to achieve and how it is trying to do that, charts, portfolio information, key personnel, latest dividends, every announcement the company makes to the exchange, its latest factsheet and latest accounts.

Guides to investing in the sector

For investors who are new to investing or new to investing in quoted funds, the website has a “helpful stuff” section that tries to explain some of the basic concepts and builds on this to cover some of the more complex aspects to investing in the sector. We are always thinking of ways of expanding on this section; for example, we have just written a piece that explains a bit about the workings of the hedge fund industry. Everything on the website is accessible through the search box.

Dedicated to the success of the industry

We have been working with investment companies for decades and we are passionate believers in the sector. We see huge potential for the sector to grow and we are working with investors who are relatively new to this area, particularly the IFA community and self-directed investors, to expand the audience for investment companies.
